The Department of Biology of Physical Activity is an active, research-oriented department within the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Jyväskylä. The department has a wide variety of international partners and it offers courses in three major subjects: biomechanics, exercise physiology, and the science of sport coaching and fitness testing. The department is also responsible for teaching the basics of biosciences to all of the students in the faculty. In addition, the department provides education in three special programmes (wellness technology, sports technology, and an international master’s degree programme with instruction in English) as well as training in the biology of physical activity for cadets studying at the National Defence University.

The department of sport sciences consists of the units of physical education and social sciences of sport. The department of sport sciences at the University of Jyväskylä is the only institution in Finland educating physical education teachers. In the Unit of Social Sciences of Sport teaching and research are conducted mainly in the fields of sport and leisure management, sport planning, sport politics, sport administration, sport ethics, sport history and sport tourism.
